SEO for home, garage and DIY products

People search for home and DIY products when something needs fixing: water under the garage door, a draughty room, an uneven floor. The businesses that win are the ones that explain the problem and the fix clearly. My main work in this sector is for GaraDry, which sells garage door threshold seals and flood barriers through separate UK and US stores. The two stores generated 6.5 million impressions and 65,909 clicks from Google in the past 12 months.

The search challenges home and DIY brands face

Problem-first searches. Many people don’t know the product name. They search for the problem, such as how to stop water coming under a garage door, and need content that connects the problem to the solution.

Fitting and suitability questions. Buyers want to know whether a product will work in their situation: floor type, gap size, door type, tools needed. Product pages that don’t answer those lose to pages that do.

Marketplaces and DIY chains. Large retailers rank for broad product searches. A specialist brand competes on depth, expertise and specific searches.

Different markets, different words. UK and US customers use different terms, units and competitors, so content written for one market rarely works in the other without real changes.

AI Overviews recommending products. Searches like “best garage door threshold seal” now often show an AI Overview naming specific products. Being the product it names matters.

How I approach it

Problem-led content Guides that explain the problem, the options and how to fix it, in each market’s language
Product and collection pages What each product does, who it suits, how it’s fitted, with comparisons
Market-specific research Live competitor research per market, not assumptions
AI search visibility AI Overview tracking, and pages that describe products clearly enough to be recommended
Technical foundations Canonicals and clean signals across separate stores
Tools Product builders that help people choose the right kit

Results for GaraDry

Measure Past 12 months
Impressions (UK and US) 6,517,509
Clicks (UK and US) 65,909
Search terms in the top three 115
Search terms on page one 1,791

Figures are from Google Search Console for both stores, 15 September 2025 to 14 September 2026.

Search Google in the UK for “best garage door threshold seal” and the AI Overview names GaraDry’s threshold seal kit first, with GaraDry’s site ranking number one below. In the US, live competitor research found GaraDry already ranking first on four of five target threshold searches, and showed the gap was the broadest term, where competitors covered the whole door rather than just the threshold. That shaped a content sprint written in US English, with US units and pricing.

A kit builder for the US store, which asks six questions and returns the exact kit, length, adhesive and accessories with live prices, is in production build. The GaraDry case study covers the strategy in full.

FAQ

How do DIY product brands get found in Google?

By answering the problems people search for, not just listing products. Guides that explain a problem and how to fix it, product pages that cover suitability and fitting, and clear comparisons help a specialist brand win searches that large retailers answer poorly, and lead people naturally to the right product.

Should UK and US stores have separate content?

Usually, yes. UK and US customers use different words, units, spellings and competitors, and their questions often differ. Content written for one market and copied to the other tends to underperform. Researching each market separately and writing for it properly gives each store a better chance to rank.

How can a product be named in an AI Overview?

Make sure the product pages are indexed and clearly explain what the product does, who it suits and how it’s used, supported by genuinely helpful guides. Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practice. Products that are the clearest answer tend to be named.
