Being the local one is an argument, not a ranking factor
There’s a temptation, when Cheshire-wide agencies outrank you in your own town, to assume being local should count for more than it does.
It doesn’t count directly. What counts is relevance, distance and prominence, and a county-branded agency with a stronger site can beat a local one on the first and third of those. Being in Northwich helps you with the distance part for customers near you, and that’s a genuine advantage, but it isn’t a trump card.
Where being local pays is in what you can write. A county-wide agency has to write about the county in general. You can write about the particular job, the particular customer, and the questions you get asked every week. That’s also why the county-wide pages tend to read thin.
The demand is visible, which is unusual
One thing worth noting is that people here ask for recommendations in public. In a local Facebook group, somebody asking for an SEO recommendation is visible in the search results, which is a more direct signal of demand than most towns give you.
Two things follow. First, word of mouth carries real weight here, and the profile and reviews are part of that rather than separate from it. Somebody who gets your name in a group will look you up before they call.
Second, it’s worth knowing what those conversations are actually asking for, because it’s usually a specific problem rather than a category. That’s the language to write in, and it’s free research.
One post proves nothing on its own. It’s a reason to go and look properly.
Do you need a page for every village?
Usually not. Davenham, Hartford, Barnton, Rudheath, Weaverham, Lostock Gralam, Sandiway and Winsford aren’t words to rotate through the same template.
A page justifies itself when it carries detail somebody could only write from doing the job locally. Otherwise one good service area page does more, and it avoids reading like the county-wide pages you’re trying to beat.
Winsford is the one worth thinking about separately, because it has its own centre and its own customers rather than being a village attached to Northwich.
When would I use Google Ads?
Ads suit the case where enquiries are needed before the slower work delivers, or where there’s a service you want to push now.
The size of the town doesn’t tell you what a click costs or whether it converts. Before spending, I’d want to know what a job is worth, which searches show real buying intent, and whether calls and forms are recorded against their source. Otherwise it’s spending without a way to judge it. My Google Ads service covers the approach.
What about AI answers?
Check before deciding it matters or doesn’t. Run the searches that already bring you work and see what comes back above the normal results.
Then ask a couple of assistants how somebody would choose a business in your trade around Northwich. Run it more than once because the answers move, and note whether you come up and whether what’s said is accurate.
Google says no special files or AI-specific markup are needed for its AI features, so be careful with anyone selling those as the fix. Google sets out the requirements here. Usually a missing mention means nothing online states clearly enough what the business does and where it covers. More under AI search visibility.
What would I look at first?
Depends what’s costing you enquiries.
- Which enquiries you’d take more of. Some of what arrives is worth chasing and some isn’t, and that shapes everything after it.
- What finds you now. Search Console, because it shows which searches you’re already close on.
- The Google Business Profile, accurate, with reviews as a standing habit somebody owns, not an occasional push.
- Getting hold of you, checked the way a customer would on a phone, not the way an owner checks their own site.
- The pages worth writing, chosen from what the first steps found, and written with the detail a county-wide competitor can’t match.
Then reporting on enquiries and the visibility behind them, explained so you can see what changed.
Who does this suit?
Trades and home services covering Northwich and the villages, where the map does most of the work and the service area needs to be unambiguous.
Shops, salons and hospitality in the town centre, where the profile, the hours and the reviews matter more than anything on the website.
Manufacturing and industrial businesses around the town whose customers aren’t searching a place name at all, which makes this a different job from local search and often a more valuable one.
If referrals already keep you busy, more visibility may not be what you need, and that’s worth establishing before spending.
What does it cost to work together?
I can’t price useful work from a town name. It depends on what’s there now and what turns out to be wrong with it. I’d want to see the site, your Search Console if it’s connected, and which of the county-wide firms keeps appearing over you. Then I’d tell you what I’d do first, why, and what it would cost.
Most of it happens remotely. Northwich is a reasonable drive and meeting is possible when it helps, but I won’t pretend that’s what makes the work any good.
Questions people ask
Why do Cheshire-wide agencies rank above local businesses here?
Because being local isn’t a ranking factor by itself. Relevance, distance and how well known a business is are what count, and a county-branded site with more authority can win on two of those three. Your advantage is that you can write with detail they can’t.
Should I put Cheshire in my site’s wording too?
Only if you genuinely serve it. Claim a county you don’t cover and you’ll field enquiries you can’t service, which costs you time. If you cover Northwich and the villages, say exactly that. Precision beats a vague claim on a wider area.
Do reviews matter here?
They matter everywhere, and in a town where people ask for recommendations in public they do a second job. Somebody who hears your name will look you up before calling, and what they find at that moment decides it.
How long will local SEO take?
No honest date before seeing the site. A corrected profile or a fixed contact route can move sooner than new pages, which need finding and assessing first. I’d agree what to watch, then review whether it turns into enquiries.
Do you only work with businesses in Northwich?
No. I work across the North West and nationally. This page is about Northwich because the competitive pattern here is its own thing. Other towns are on the locations page.
