AI search visibility

Your customers are asking Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT for recommendations, and those answers name some businesses and not others. AI search visibility is the work of making sure yours is one of the names, and measuring how often it happens.

There is no separate trick for AI search. Google says the same fundamentals apply, which means most of the work is SEO done properly and aimed at being quoted.

What AI search visibility means

AI search visibility is how often your business is mentioned, recommended or cited as a source when someone asks an AI system a question. That includes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Being cited with a link can send visitors. Being named can win the sale even without a click.

There’s no separate trick to it. Google’s guidance on AI features says the same SEO best practices apply, and that a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be used in AI Overviews. What changes is how content is structured, how clearly your business is defined, and how the results are measured.

A real result

Search Google in the UK for “best garage door threshold seal” and the AI Overview names GaraDry’s threshold seal kit first, with GaraDry’s site ranking number one underneath. That combination, cited in the answer and first in the results, is what this work aims for. The full story is in the GaraDry case study.

Who it’s for

AI search visibility suits businesses whose customers research before they buy: ecommerce stores, service businesses, clinics and anyone whose customers ask “what’s the best” or “who should I use”. It’s especially worth looking at if:

  • your impressions are rising in Search Console but clicks aren’t
  • competitors are being named in AI answers and you aren’t
  • customers mention finding you, or someone else, through ChatGPT
  • you don’t know how often AI systems mention you at all

What helps a business get cited

There’s no secret formula, but the businesses that show up in AI answers tend to have a few things in common. Their pages answer questions directly, near the top, in words that make sense if quoted on their own. Their business is clearly defined: what it is, what it sells, where it operates and who’s behind it. And they’re already trusted in ordinary search, with pages Google has indexed and ranks well.

Structured data helps AI systems and search engines understand a business and its content, and named authors with real experience help show why a page is worth trusting. None of this is new. It’s good SEO, applied with the way AI systems read and quote pages in mind.

Why a business can be missing from AI answers

When a business doesn’t appear, the reason is usually one of a few things. Its key pages might not be indexed, or might be blocked from the crawlers AI systems rely on. The content might describe the business without ever answering the questions customers ask. Or competitors might simply explain the subject better and be referenced more widely.

The first job is working out which of these applies, because each needs a different fix.

How it’s measured

AI answers change with the wording of a question, the model and the day, so a single screenshot proves very little. I track a fixed set of prompts across the platforms that matter, run each more than once, and record whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited with a link, and who was cited instead. Referral traffic from AI assistants is tracked in GA4 alongside it. The method is set out on the methodology page, and the tooling on the AI search toolkit page.

Results

  • GaraDry UK and USA: named first in Google’s AI Overview for “best garage door threshold seal”, with number one in the results below, and 6.5 million impressions across two stores in the last 12 months
  • Kwiat: 9.3 million impressions, and cited twice in Google’s US AI Overview for “what is an ashoka cut diamond” while ranking second below it

It starts with good SEO

AI systems cite pages that are technically sound, clearly structured and genuinely useful, which is why this work sits alongside SEO and content. If your site has technical problems, those come first. The AI search guide explains how the pieces fit together.

FAQ

Can I pay to appear in Google’s AI Overviews?

No. There’s no way to buy a citation in the answer itself. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews, and pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. What you can do is make your pages the clearest, most useful and most trustworthy answer to the question.

Does llms.txt help with AI search?

Not for Google. Google’s guidance says no special files or markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so llms.txt won’t change your visibility there. It can be added as an optional extra for other AI platforms, but it’s not where I’d spend effort first.

How do you know if ChatGPT mentions my business?

By asking it, properly. I run a fixed set of prompts your customers would realistically use, several times each, and record whether your business is mentioned, linked or replaced by a competitor. Referral traffic from ChatGPT and other assistants is also tracked in GA4, so you see visits as well as mentions.

Is AI search taking clicks away from my website?

It can be, for some searches. When an AI Overview answers a question fully, fewer people may click through, which often shows as impressions rising while clicks stay flat. The response is to be the cited source, target searches where people still need to click, and measure both.
