How to appear in Google AI Overviews

To appear in Google AI Overviews, your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search, and it needs to be one of the most useful pages on the question. Google says there are no extra requirements, special files or schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The work is SEO done well: crawlable pages, clear answers and content that goes beyond what everyone else has said.

There’s plenty of advice promising secret AI Overview tactics. This post sticks to what Google’s own documentation says, plus what I’ve seen work on a real small business site.

What Google says it takes

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations necessary. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Its AI features are rooted in the same ranking and quality systems as normal search.

Google’s documentation on AI features and your website sets out the requirements in plain terms:

  • No additional requirements. “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
  • Indexed and snippet-eligible. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
  • No special schema. There’s no special schema.org structured data to add.
  • Query fan-out. AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue several related searches across subtopics to build a response, so a page can be cited for part of a question.

Its AI optimisation guide adds that SEO best practices stay relevant “because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems”.

Step 1: make sure the page can be used at all

Before anything else, confirm the page is indexed and nothing stops Google showing a snippet from it. A noindex tag, a robots.txt block or a nosnippet directive will keep a page out of AI Overviews, however good it is. Search Console’s URL Inspection tool shows whether a page is indexed.

  • [ ] Inspect the page in Search Console with URL Inspection and confirm it’s indexed.
  • [ ] Check robots.txt doesn’t block Googlebot from the page.
  • [ ] Check for noindex in the page code or HTTP headers.
  • [ ] Check snippet controls. Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what it shows from a page, including in AI features.
  • [ ] Confirm the main content is visible to Google, not hidden behind logins or unrendered scripts.

Step 2: be one of the best answers

AI Overviews draw on pages Google’s systems already judge to be helpful and reliable. The page needs to answer the question well, with detail, first-hand experience or original information that isn’t available everywhere else. Google calls this non-commodity content and says it matters more than anything else in its guide.

Google’s AI optimisation guide says creating content people find “unique, compelling, and useful” will likely influence presence in generative AI search more than any of its other suggestions. It warns against simply recycling what’s already out there.

For a small business, that’s where you have an edge:

Commodity content Non-commodity content
“5 benefits of a garage door seal” How a threshold seal is fitted on an uneven floor, with photos from real installations
A generic definition copied from other sites A clear answer plus the details only someone who sells or fits the product knows
A list of tips anyone could write Specific measurements, prices, mistakes and results from your own work

Step 3: answer clearly and early

Put a direct answer to the main question near the top of the page, under a clear heading, then expand on it. Pages that state the answer plainly are easier for readers and AI systems to use. Google says there’s no need to break content into tiny chunks, so write naturally for readers.

  • Lead with the answer. One or two sentences that fully answer the question before any background.
  • Use descriptive headings. Headings that match the questions people ask help readers and search engines navigate.
  • Keep facts specific. Sizes, prices, timescales and conditions are more useful than vague claims.
  • Don’t chop it up. Google’s guide says chunking content into tiny pieces isn’t required.

Step 4: make your business and products unmistakable

AI Overviews often name products and businesses. Make it easy to identify yours: clear product and service pages that explain what each thing does and who it suits, consistent business details, and up-to-date Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profile information where relevant.

Google’s AI optimisation guide says products like Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles can help products and services be visible in AI responses as well as other search results. For shops, accurate product data matters. For local businesses, a complete and active Business Profile does.

A real example

Search Google in the UK for “best garage door threshold seal” and the AI Overview names GaraDry’s threshold seal kit first, with GaraDry’s site ranking number one in the results below. The pages behind it clearly explain what each product does, who it suits and how it’s fitted.

Nothing about that result relied on AI-specific tactics. The product and collection pages explain the range plainly, guides answer the problems people search for, such as water coming under a garage door, and the site ranks well in normal results. Being named in the AI Overview followed from being the most useful source on the question. The GaraDry case study covers the full strategy across the UK and US stores.

Live results change, and AI Overviews vary with location, wording and time, so it’s worth checking your own key searches regularly rather than relying on a single check.

What you can ignore

Google says you can ignore several popular AI search tactics for its AI features: llms.txt and other special AI files, chunking content into tiny pieces, chasing inauthentic mentions and adding special schema. Creating separate pages for every query variation to manipulate AI answers breaches its scaled content abuse policy.

Tactic Google’s position
llms.txt files Not used by Google Search. Does llms.txt matter? covers the detail
Chunking content Not required
Special AI schema No special schema.org markup needed
Inauthentic mentions Not as helpful as it might seem
A page for every query variation Doing it primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates the scaled content abuse policy

How to track whether it’s working

Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the Performance report, within the Web search type, but doesn’t separate it. Track your key searches by checking them regularly, noting whether an AI Overview appears and whether your site is cited, alongside clicks and impressions in Search Console.

  • Keep a list of 20 to 50 searches that matter to your business.
  • Check them monthly on google.co.uk, noting whether an AI Overview appears and which sites and businesses it names.
  • Compare with Search Console, looking at impressions, clicks and position for the same searches.
  • Watch for impressions holding while clicks fall, which can mean an AI Overview is answering the question. Is AI search taking your clicks? explains how to check.

What I learned

The businesses I see in AI Overviews got there by being the clearest, most specific answer on a question their customers ask. GaraDry wasn’t optimised for AI Overviews as a separate project. It was optimised to be the best result for people with a garage door problem, and the AI Overview followed.

The most common reason I find for a business not appearing is simpler than any AI tactic: the page that should answer the question doesn’t really answer it, or it answers it in the same words as ten other sites.

FAQ

Can I pay to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews cite pages from Google’s search index, chosen by the same ranking and quality systems as normal results, and Google says it doesn’t accept payment to rank pages higher. Google Ads are a separate, labelled product. The way into AI Overviews is being indexed, eligible and genuinely useful.

Do I need schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there’s no special schema.org structured data needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data can still help Google understand your products, business and articles, and it supports rich results in normal search, but it isn’t a requirement for AI features.

Why isn’t my site showing in AI Overviews when it ranks well?

AI Overviews don’t appear for every search, and they draw on several sources, sometimes found through related searches. Your page may not be indexed with a snippet, may not answer the specific question clearly, or other pages may cover it more usefully. Check eligibility first, then compare your answer with the sources cited.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

There’s no fixed timescale. A page needs to be crawled, indexed and judged among the most useful sources for a question. Improvements to an already-indexed page can be reflected once Google recrawls it, while new pages and sites usually take longer, much like building rankings in normal search.
