AI visibility tracking

If your customers are finding businesses through AI answers, you need to know whether you’re one of the names. AI visibility tracking measures how often Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT and other AI assistants mention or cite your business, who they name instead, and how many visits those answers send, tracked over time so you can see what’s working.

AI answers change between runs. Anyone reporting a single AI visibility score without saying how often they checked is guessing.

What AI visibility tracking is

AI visibility tracking is the regular, repeatable measurement of your business’s presence in AI-generated answers. It checks a fixed set of prompts and searches on the AI platforms your customers use, records whether you’re mentioned, cited with a link or replaced by a competitor, and pairs that with the visits AI assistants send to your site in Google Analytics 4.

It exists because the usual numbers don’t show this. Traditional rank tracking tells you where a page ranks in the ordinary results, and analytics shows clicks, but neither shows when an AI Overview or ChatGPT names your competitor and never mentions you.

Who it’s for

This suits businesses that are already investing in AI search visibility, or thinking about it, and want evidence rather than a one-off screenshot. It’s particularly useful if:

  • you’ve had AI search or content work done and want to see whether it’s changed anything
  • competitors are appearing in AI answers and you want to watch the gap
  • your impressions are rising while clicks aren’t, and you want to understand why
  • you report to a board, owner or partners who want proof, not opinion

What gets tracked

Measure What it shows Where it comes from
AI Overview presence Whether an AI Overview appears for your key searches, and whether your site is cited Checks of Google’s UK results
Mentions Whether each assistant names your business for your prompts ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot
Citations Whether your site is linked as a source All platforms checked
Share of voice Which competitors are named or cited, and how often compared with you All platforms checked
Accuracy Whether what AI says about your business, prices or services is correct All platforms checked
AI referral visits Visits and enquiries arriving from AI assistants Google Analytics 4
Search context Impressions, clicks and positions for the same topics Google Search Console

How the tracking works

  1. Choose the prompts. Together we agree 20 to 50 searches and prompts that matter to your business, from how customers actually ask, covering products, services, comparisons and local questions.
  2. Fix the method. Location, signed-out browsing and the exact wording are fixed, so checks are comparable from one month to the next.
  3. Run and repeat. Each prompt is run more than once per check, because AI answers vary, and results are recorded with dates.
  4. Connect the visits. A custom channel group in GA4 groups AI assistant referrals, so visits and conversions are visible next to search and other channels.
  5. Report the trend. Each report shows the change since the last one, what’s driving it, and what to do next.

The method follows the approach set out on the methodology page.

What you get

  • A baseline report showing where you stand on every platform, with dated examples
  • Regular reports showing mentions, citations, share of voice and AI referral visits, with the change since the last report
  • Accuracy alerts when an assistant describes your business wrongly, with the likely source
  • Recommendations for the pages and profiles that would most improve visibility

Sample report extract

SUMMARY: Cited in AI Overviews for 9 of 30 tracked searches (previous report: 7). Named by ChatGPT in 4 of 30 prompts. COMPETITORS: Competitor A named in 12 prompts, mostly comparison questions. ACCURACY: Perplexity quotes an old delivery price from a 2024 blog post. ACTION: Update the delivery information in the old post and add the current price to the delivery page’s opening answer.

The example above is illustrative.

Results

GaraDry’s AI Overview presence is tracked for both its UK and US stores. On google.co.uk on 15 September 2026, the AI Overview for “best garage door threshold seal” named GaraDry’s kit first, with GaraDry ranking first in the results below. The GaraDry case study covers the wider work.

Limitations

AI answers are not stable. The same prompt can produce different answers minutes apart, answers vary by location and model version, and platforms change how they work without notice. Tracking reduces that noise by repeating prompts and dating results, but it’s a sample of what people see, not a complete record. It can’t see every conversation people have with an assistant.

What this won’t solve

Tracking shows what’s happening. It doesn’t change it on its own. Improving visibility is covered by AI citation readiness and Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and tracking is most useful alongside that work.

Talk to the person doing the work

There is no account manager here and no team to be handed to. If you get in touch, it is me who reads it, me who looks at your site, and me who does the work if we go ahead.

Engagement and price

There are no list prices here, and that is deliberate. What a piece of work costs depends on the state of the site, how much of it there is and what you actually need, none of which I know before looking at it.

So it starts with a free analysis. I look at your site, your Search Console and who you are really competing with, then come back with what I would do first and what it would cost to do. No obligation attached, and if the honest answer is that you do not need me yet, I will say so.

How the work gets done

The checks run through the AI search toolkit, and results are reviewed by me before they’re reported. AI visibility can also be added to monthly SEO and AI search reporting. FAQ

How do you track AI search visibility?

By checking a fixed set of prompts and searches on each AI platform, on a regular schedule, and recording whether your business is mentioned, cited with a link or replaced by a competitor. Running each prompt more than once smooths out how much AI answers vary, and dates make the trend reliable.

Which AI platforms should a small business track?

Start with the ones your customers actually use. For most UK businesses that means Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, because of how many searches they appear on, plus ChatGPT. Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot are worth adding where your audience is more likely to use them.

Can AI visibility be measured in Google Analytics?

Partly. Google Analytics 4 can show visits that arrive from AI assistants, usually as referrals from their domains, and a custom channel group makes them easy to follow. It can’t show mentions that don’t lead to a click, so prompt tracking fills that gap.

How often should AI visibility be checked?

Monthly suits most small businesses. AI answers change often, so a single check can mislead, but checking the same prompts every month shows the direction clearly without creating busywork. Around a launch, a site change or a major Google update, checking more often for a few weeks is sensible.
